I need strong internet privacy because I do anonymous surfing with a provider who uses OpenVPN. I am on linux, how can I make sure that my anonymous internet connection really is anonymous and not leaking DNS requests to my ISP?

You can secure OpenVPN from DNS leaks on linux with this 12 step manual from XeroBank. It involves setting up a firewall, and locking down the DNS requests so they don’t leak onto your local network.

You can set the DNS server to be a safe server. However, that won’t stop the ISP from sniffing your connection looking for DNS requests and recording them. This is assuming that the DNS requests don’t go through the VPN connection.
Probably the best thing to protect that type of attack, would be for you to run your own DNS service locally. You can pre-load the DNS with many of your common sites. You could run into a problem of having stale data if you do the pre-load. You could also set it up to load a large number of sites thus obscuring what you are actually doing.
