‘Colocated hosting’ or ‘co-located hosting’ refers to a Web hosting service in which the user’s server is co-located at the data center. In other words, user purchases his own server and runs it in the datacenter of the hosting company. In this type of hosting, users have the flexibility to manage and secure their server while the hosting company provides the server space along with external service and support including security, high redundancy, controlled air temperature, managed server solutions and power back-ups.
Colocated hosting is probably the most expensive type of server hosting and is preferred by people who are experienced in server administration.
In dedicated hosting, a user gets a server completely dedicated for his Web site; however, typically the user does not own it, but he leases it. The hosting company provides all services offered at the datacenter including maintenance, security and backup. With such a facility, the Web site gets customized service from the host. Dedicated servers also promise better speed and enhanced security. Dedicated server is suitable for businesses that have to manage large volumes of data on their Web site.
A dedicated hosting customer has the complete freedom to modify dedicated server settings, including the hardware and software components. This facility enables businesses to scale the server based on their business requirements. Moreover, the service promises better Web site monitoring capabilities to users. They can increase the uptime of the Web site, giving maximum optimization to the contents. However, the users may be restricted from allowing certain Web sites, for example, pornographic Web sites, in order to maintain the integrity of the Web host’s network.
In managed Web hosting, the hosting company owns and controls the Web server, hardware and operating systems whereas users are allowed to manage the data via file transfer protocol (FTP) or other remote management tools. Managed hosting empowers the service provider with better control over the server by not allowing the user to modify the server.
There are pros and cons associated with each type of hosting. In colocated hosting, the user owns the server, so initial setup cost is higher. However, monthly rentals for colocated server are comparatively less than dedicated server. In dedicated hosting, a user gets all services offered in a colocated Web hosting through an exclusive server offered to him. Managed hosting varies from one service provider to another. The cost of hosting depends on the kind of services offered.
