Domain names are basically the identity of a website in the virtual world of the internet. It is similar to the names given to each one of us, for identification. The only difference is that two human beings may have the same name, but two websites can never have the same domain names. The domain names are used in various ways, for identification, reference, uniform resource locators and they also appear after the ‘@’ sign in an e-mail address.

The naming of a domain is done through the DNS methodology. The DNS confers a unique name to a domain after the customary domain registration. The process of domain registration is done through the registrars. These registrars have the authorisation and accreditation of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The ICANN is responsible for overseeing the process of the distribution of domain names and numbers for the internet.

Domain registration is done generally for a specific period of time. Generally the period of domain registration varies between one to ten years. The period of domain registration can be extended at any point of time before the end of the grace period.

The domain Name Registration system is an international process involving all the countries of the world. Once the domain is registered under the domain name registration system, the name cannot be altered. Although, a party can sell their domain to another, but again the second party has to get the domain registered under its name in the domain name registration system.

In the past few years, the whole process of domain name registration has been made simpler. Due to this simplification, we see many new domain spaces being bought and sold in the world market and this domain name registration has become a big business. Many individuals as well as big and small companies are coming forward to get their own domain space and to reach out to the world by developing their own websites.

I use the term “generate” very loosely considering almost any site online has the capabilities of generating cash for you! There are programs you can earn money with like cash gifting and cash generators, as well as other ways such as AdSense, CPA programs, domain parking, freelancing, etc. All the processes listed below will allow you to easily make money online:

Cash Gifting – These websites allow you to pay a certain amount of money to get into the “business.” Cash gifting is a good way for people to help people. People will help you make a certain amount of money and then you will help them make a certain of money. Note this doesn’t happen over night, sometimes it takes 30 to 90 days to actually see any profit, but in most cases more often than not you will see a good amount of money being made here! Some sites you can check out are PerfectRiches and CashGiftingMentor.

CPA Programs – CPA is sometimes referred to as “Cost Per Action”, which has to do with the fact that most CPA offers by advertisers are about acquiring something (typically new customers by making sales). You can usually place CPA codes on your site, which will allow you to “sell” things from your site. When people sign up or buy the product, you will be given a certain percentage from the initial sale. Say you are advertising an e-book on your website and someone clicks the advert and goes to the site, they will buy the e-book for $150 and then you receive 35% of the sale, which means you earned $52.50 for just that one sale! These offers add up quite nicely especially if you get in with a CPA program that has high rates.

AdSense – I’ve always liked AdSense but its one of those programs where some people make thousands a month and others make $10 a month. There is a reason for this however! Some people don’t market the site they have the AdSense code on enough, which is causing them to have a low CPM rating. Or in other cases their website simply isn’t interesting enough, sadly. You want people to stay on your site, not visit it and jump off in 2 seconds! Find a popular niche or some popular keywords for your niche, make the website interesting. Don’t drone on. Put a little bit of your personality into the website!

Also, make sure you follow the rules of AdSense with the colors of the ads compared to your site colors. You can’t have it so the ad colors are the same or almost the same colors of your site because to Google it makes it seem like your trying to trick people in to accidentally clicking the ads on your site!

Domain Parking – I did this a few years back when Arbitrage was allowed, but even though arb isn’t allowed anymore, people are still making good money from these programs. Try sites like Sedo, Fabulous and Parked (very highly rated). Since arb isn’t allowed anymore it’s a good idea to make your domain a parking page if you receive a lot of natural or organic traffic. The steps are really easy.

Find a parking program. Sign up. Direct your DNS on your registrar from the domain you want to use to the domain parking DNS, set up the colors, templates, themes, keywords, etc. Traffic will get sent to the parking site and YOU will earn a percentage of the profit made from your site. Take a look at sites that offer 80% or more.

Freelancing – Many people online offer some sort of a service or have a specialty they are good at. These people can sell their services online in places such as websites, forums, even by putting an email sig in their email program. In my personal experience service forums or forums that allow service providers or have a marketplace which will allow you to make a thread with your shpeel and allow people to contact you either through the thread or through PM. This is probably my most successful way of selling my service, so I seriously suggest you check it out!

Of course there is thousands of other ways to generate cash online, but these are a few processes that have worked for me either in the present or the past, so now I am handing you the torch to success! Good luck finding all the right programs, and make sure you have fun with this! The programs listed above are meant to make you money while working at home so you can finally say goodbye to your 9-5!

Security of any business is becoming a critical factor to improve your business operations. If an incident occurs, the security guards are your first level decision makers with limited information and authority. Decision makers are informed after a time delay with little and with very little details available. Failure to meet the needs of growing multi-location businesses or executives on the move is one of the major investments.

Same time how to select proper Video Surveillance System for your business is a major concern. Indian market is flooded with Taiwan, Chinese, Korean and Some Indian products and there are multiple options available to choose from. Usually, when you go to a vendor selling security products you do not know what to ask for and one might end up with a wrong product.

Product technology has transitioned from old days CCTV camera to latest sophisticated
IP Based intelligent Video Surveillance systems (Networked Video Surveillance Systems). As market is enjoying the Benefits of internet and IT as whole, now a lot could be expected our of the security systems fitted in your facility.

IP camera systems are good entry level option. If you’re your need one or two camera and would like to monitor remotely IP cameras are nice choice. There are multiple varieties are IP cameras in the market.

But for multiple camera systems , IP cameras do not stream video over the Internet properly. So your need is for more than one camera then you should know that these are the factors that you should consider and ask the vendor the right questions and then make a wise decision according to your budget and requirement.

You should go for a networked surveillance system even if you do not have an internet connection because you can view it locally anyways and you have the option of connecting it to the internet for remote viewing anytime in future. Since the price difference between the traditional CCTV and networked Video Surveillance Unit will be only about 20% more. You will spend on the cameras and wiring any ways.

What you should look in a security product – that is advanced CCTV or Video Surveillance System

1. Storage capacity of DVRs– Make sure your systems provides you adequate days and months of storage for all of your cameras.

2. Secure Access – The IP Video Surveillance System should provide Secure Access – when you are accessing you location over the internet it should have secure access over the VPN (Virtual Private Network). So that there is less or no possibility that anybody can hack your location and get visibility into your facility, shop or business.

3. Extensible Storage – The IP Video Surveillance System should provide Extensible Storage. One should be able to add the storage so that one can save the important data for multiple days or months as required. Also one should be able to save such data over the LAN at different location for security reasons. One should be able to have the option of having extendible Storage through NAS and RAID.

4. Scalable -The networked Surveillance System should be Scaleable and should be able to add local and remote cameras. So the system should be scalable to add cameras and also the storage via NAS and RAID.

5. Different Types of Cameras Support – You might need to use night vision and PTZ cameras. The networked surveillance system should support PTZ cameras and also one should be able to operate the cameras over the Internet and should be able to Pan and Zoom the camera.

6. MPEG4 and H.264 Industry Standard Compliant – The Networked Video Surveillance should be built using the industry standards of MPEG 4 and H.264. One should pay attention to this because many companies might claim to have these but in reality one should see that they are following the standards because this will save you in operating costs and you will need less storage and disk space.

7. Adaptation to Local Internet Band with – The Networked Video Surveillance should adapt to available Internet band with and should not be rigid. If this feature is not there then you will not be able to watch the video at all on fluctuating Internet band with. This will help you to get access from anywhere and anytime.

8. Viewing Multiple Videos over the net in Real Time- If all the above mentioned technologies are used in the product then one should be able to see multiple videos streaming real time on 256 Broad band connections or even on 126 Kbps wireless connections to the laptop.

9. Dynamic DNS Support – The Networked Video Surveillance should provide Dynamic DNS support. This will save you running cost of purchasing Static IP and also many Internet providers especially in developing countries do not proved static IP.

10. Inter-operability over different platforms – Inter-operability with various clients Apple, PDAs, Windows and Linux. So you should be able to access your premises on various types of mobile and stationary equipment and also over multiple technology platforms.

11. Video Management Software – The networked Surveillance System should give have Intelligent video management software that gives administrative rights at various levels so that the owner can assign the appropriate access rights to the appropriate person.

12. Intelligent UPS support – The system should turn off safely when the power supply goes off and it comes on UPS.

13. Preserve latest video in case of sudden power loss- the networked Surveillance System should be able to save the latest data when sudden power loss happens.

14. Local Supply and Support – The system should have local supply and support.

15. Warranty- Make sure that the CCTV, DVR or NVSS has one year warranty and that they will give you the new unit if there is a problem with in one year and you should be able to purchase extended warranty for less than 25% of the product value. This is important because the system can fail and you can loose all your investment in less than a year.

16. User Manual- User Manual should be available with the product. If somebody is purchasing a card and building a system on a cheap computer this may not be there.

17. The system should have the capability and option to record only on motion to save on hard disk and avoid unwanted recording.

18. The system should raise an alert when the camera is not working or is being disconnected for any reason.

19. The system should generate alerts via emails and / or SMS when there is motion and on intrusion or user defined events.

20. Also make sure that the system will work with your existing wiring and cameras so you do not have to incur that cost again if you are replacing your old CCTV unit. You may end up replacing some old cameras with the better cameras and might want to use some night vision or PTZ cameras according to your need.

As you can see that it is not easy to select the proper CCTV (networked) or Networked Video Surveillance System. There is a lot of choice and price range in the market.
We wish you all the best. If you are in mid-market (6 to 64cameras) or higher market (100 +and looking for a Solution can send you a list of products that we recommend. Send us an email at videosurveillance1@gmail.com.

Transferring a domain name from one registrar to another can appear a confusing and complex issue. In reality it’s really quite simple after you’ve gathered a few important pieces of information.

The first step is to find the new “home” for your domain name. There are really only two options here: a domain registrar or a web hosting company which is also a domain registrar. Some registrar’s do not offer web hosting services – in these cases when someone tries to reach your site the internet directory system (called DNS) will be contacting them to find out where your website is really located. This is a perfectly viable solution but may not be the lowest cost as there are many web hosts that now also offer domain registrar services as well. This second option will allow you to manage the domain name as well as host your website in one place and often comes at a lower price than separating out the two services. You must decide what is best for you thought for simplicity it is probably easier to just have everything managed at one location.

The second step is to visit your old registrar and obtain your authorization code. This code will be required to give your new registrar the ability to request the domain name transfer. On most registrars this code can be obtained directly by navigating to the proper page. You may need to use your registrars search function and look up “authorization code” or “transfer domain name” to find out where the authorization code is stored. In the worst cases you may even need to contact the registrar to request the code. Once you have this code you are almost ready to initiate the transfer.

The third step in domain transfer is to make sure the domain name is “open” to transfer. Years ago it was really easy to initiate this activity and because of the simple rules domain hijacking was far more common. To help reduce this problem registrars moved to a system which would allow users to set domain names to a “locked” state which would prevent anyone from starting a transfer. If you have a decent registrar this will be the case and you may need to change the “state” of your domain name to allow the transfer to begin. Again this is usually managed right on the same page that you find your domain name but you may need to use their search function and or call the registrar to get help.

Once you have found your new home, found your authorization code, and made sure the domain is “open” for transfer you are ready to initiate the move. The fourth step is to initiate and accept the domain transfer. On your new registrar’s site find their domain management or transfer tool. You’ll need to enter the name of the domain and then you’ll also be asked for the authorization code. Once you’ve submitted the request you will need to check the email address tied to the domain name – this will most likely be the one you used when you signed up for the domain. If for some reason you no longer have access to that account you are going to have to jump through some hoops to get this step handled.

If you don’t have access to that email the fastest way to get this resolved is to call the old registrar and let them know what has happened. If your site isn’t a fortune 500 company you’ll most likely have an easier time but don’t be surprised if resolving this issue takes a bit of time. If you have access to the email things will be simple – you’ll most likely just need to click a link in it to “agree” to allow the transfer to begin or possibly you’ll receive a code that you’ll need to enter somewhere to allow it to begin.

Once you are all done the last thing you’ll need to do is make sure everything works after the transfer. The actual transfer will take anywhere from a few hours to many days. If things are done right you won’t suffer any downtime for your website but in the worst cases you’ll see up to 48 hours of connection issues for some users as their DNS servers are updated with the new information. In our experience there have been very few issues.

In review here are the steps:

1. Find a new registrar or a webhost which offers registrar services
2. Get the authorization code for your domain
3. Make the request
4. Accept the request which was sent to your email
5. Make sure everything works after the transfer

After the domain name is transferred you should be good to go!

This is the first article in a series of 3 aimed at those just starting out in the world of websites and the internet. If you are baffled with the different terms and what they mean, these articles are for you. In this first article I will explain in simple terms what some web development terms mean. To have a website on the internet you need both a domain name and web hosting: – see below:

A Domain Name is an easy to remember address that gets translated by DNS (domain name servers) into the servers IP address. This mean your domain name is the address of where you website is stored. Eg. www.mysite.com. In order to publish your webpage’s on the internet you will need a domain name AND web hosting. (see below)

A Host or web hosting is where a computer stores website files which has a web server running on it. You need a web host to be able to have websites published on the internet. You will also need an address (Domain name). There are many different web hosting companies all offering different packages. Fundamentally they are all the same; they sell server space for your website.

Domain Name Registrar is a company accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). You can buy domains from a registrar and some registrars also provide DNS hosting (web hosting) but this is not required as it is often a separate service.

Domain Resellers programs are where anyone can set up a reseller program to sell on domains. Domain resellers buy their domains from an ICANN registrar at trade prices and then sell them on to their customers with the same discount. Many web development companies become resellers so they can sell domains to their customers are discounted prices.

A server is a computer that relays information and handles requests for website data, email, file transfers from other computers. You can turn most computer into servers which means you could host your own website if you were prepared to leave it on all the time. Most people pay a web hosting company to use their servers to host their website.

A Dedicated Server is what some web hosting companies use. There are servers that have 24 hours support and all the latest technology. If your site outgrows its shared server space because of the amount of traffic you are getting then your better off using a company that use dedicated servers. When looking at web host companies see if they use dedicated servers. If they do you know you will get good support and get all the latest upgrades.

HTML which stands for Hypertext Markup Language is the language in which web pages are written. If you look at a website page and view its source (right click and click ‘view source’) you will see its html.

HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol which is the main protocol used to transfer and receive date over the internet.

An IP Address is a unique number identifying all devices connected to the Internet. IP stands for Internet Protocol Address. Domain names hide the IP address with the www.wordingpart.com.

An ISP stands for Internet Service Provider which is a company that proves members with Internet access. Customers have a username and a password and can dial-up or use a cable or DSL line to connect to ISP’s network which is connected to the Internet. Virgin Media and BT Internet are ISP’s.

Sub-Domains allows you to set up different sections of your site as a separate domain (E.G. http://somedirectory.yourdomain.com)

In part two of this series of articles I will explain the many different services that come along with web hosting which is needed to publish your websites on the internet.

These are some of the easiest and quickest ways to make money online, most of which are the ones I started out with. There will be no survey sites because those are a waste of everyones time, there will be no paid to read sites because those are a waste of time as well. However you will find some affiliate, freelance, and blog/affiliate processes. These have been proven to work, and not just by me, but by many others. Once again (as if I even have to say it) you wont become rich by doing these proceeses unless you find the “golden key”. But they will give you enough money to live, or to live modestly, I know because I am living modestly from them!

Domain Parking – I did this a few years back when Arbitrage was permitted, but even though arb isn’t allowed any longer, individuals are still creating good money income from these programs. Try places like Sedo, Fabulous and Parked (very highly rated). Since arb isn’t allowed any longer it’s a good idea to make your domain a parking page if you receive a lot of natural or organic traffic. The steps are very easy. Find a parking program. Sign up. Point your DNS on your registrar from the domain you want to use to the domain parking DNS, set up the colors, templates, themes, keywords, etc. Traffic will get sent to the parking site and YOU will get a share of the profit made from your web site. Take a look at sites that offer 80% or more.

Freelancing – Many individuals online offer some sort of a service or have a specialty they are good at. These people can sell their services online in places such as websites, forums, even by putting an e-mail sig in their email program. In my own experience service forums or forums that allow service providers or have a marketplace which will allow you to make a thread with your shpeel and allow people contact you either through the thread or through PM are the best. This is probably my most winning way of marketing my service, so I seriously suggest you check it out!

CPA Programs – CPA is sometimes referred to as “Cost Per Action”, which has to do with the fact that most CPA offers by advertisers are about getting something (typically new customers by making sales). You can normally place CPA codes on your site, which will let you “sell” things from your site. When individuals sign up or buy the item, you will be given a certain percentage from the initial sale. Say you are advertising an e-book on your website and someone clicks the advert and goes to the site, they will buy the e-book for $150 and then you receive 35% of the sale, which means you made $52.50 for just that one sale! These offers add up rather nicely especially if you get in with a CPA program that has high rates.

Ebay & Affiliate Storefronts -

As far as shopfronts go, I actually like Amazon merely because they offer many diverse products on the website. For example, I have a website, so I can go to Amazon and pick out different affiliates that I know that I will be utilizing at my joke site. Affiliates that offer such things as gag gifts, gag gifts, funny gifts, etc. Once I find the affiliates to use I won’t only set the affiliate links, but I can also set up affiliate websites. Then, I can either “sneak” in the affiliate links onto my blog, or I can also include the actual mini stores on my blog. This is good because people can visually see what I offer on my site.

Of course like I said above, there are a ton more ways to make money online, but really, if I listed every single way I may as well just write an e-book and sell it (which is another way you can earn residual income for yoursefl)!

The Internet is the fastest growing form of media and features over 50 million websites and this superhighway only seems to be getting busier with its ever-growing expansion. The huge number of websites active on the World Wide Web has created a huge demand for the emergence of web hosting companies. To the novice player, find the right web hosting company could come across as a daunting task. It therefore becomes important to become equipped with the basics of web hosting business including the industry jargons or terminology used in the hosting industry.

An amateur web master may not be familiar with the common web hosting terms and this could make the selection process quite complicated. Listed below is a glossary of hosting terms that would help you figure out what’s what in the web hosting industry.

Alias:

Aliases are used to identify different email accounts and can also redirect the mail to other POP3 accounts or to other folders within the same email address. A catch-all alias can be used to process e-mail from unknown senders, and is often known as a “junk-mail” sorter.

Auto-Responders:

While auto-responders are not email accounts in themselves, they are assigned an email address and it auto-respond to anyone who sends them an email. The reply is a pre-formatted email and every response is identical to the corresponding queries or concerns.

Bandwidth:

Bandwidth is a term used to describe the amount of data that can pass through a communications channel (such as an Internet connection) in a given period of time. Bandwidth is often measured monthly.

Browser:

A browser is a program that allows access to the web visually by allowing requests from special files known as HyperText Markup Language. The Internet Explorer program from Microsoft is the most popular among other browsers.

Client

A client is a computer program that can download files for editing, run applications, or request application based services from a file server.

Dedicated Hosting:

Dedicated hosting is an ideal option for websites that receive high amounts of traffic. The user gets access to an entire server with the dedicated hosting service and has access to all its resources.

DNS:

DNS stands for “Domain Name System” and facilitates easy differentiation between different institutions like .com, .us, .ca etc.

Domain Parking:

Domain Parking refers to when individuals or companies buy the domain names before they are ready to use them.

FTP:

File Transfer Protocol governs the transfer of files between computers over a network.

Gigabyte:

A gigabyte is a unit of computer memory or data storage capacity equal to 1,024 megabytes. One Gigabyte (Gb) is equal to about one billion bytes (230 bytes).

HTML and HTTP:

HyperText Markup Language is a computer language used to structure the text and multimedia documents of a website as well as create hypertext links between electronic documents.
HTTP or HyperText Transfer Protocol is used to request and transmit web pages and web page components over the Internet or other computer networks.

ISP:

This is an acronym for Internet Server Provider

If you are thinking about changing your web host, it is advisable to lap up on ample information and thereby make a well-informed decision. Web masters usually consider a web host change if they are looking for enhanced or greater scalability and technical support that may be lacking in their current hosting plan. A few preliminary measures will help you make a wise decision and you are then ready to move on to next level.

Before you switch hosts, ensure that you have copies of everything that is related to your website. Also ensure that the entire content including databases, web pages and scripts are archived. In order to handle disaster management in the event of unexpected data loss or hardware failure, it is advisable to back up all your data well in advance and at regular intervals. This move in turn would ensure smooth functioning of your website after you have switched hosts as the entire data would be compressed and archived in its original directories.

The next step is to choose a reliable and superior web hosting services provider who is well equipped to surpass the services of your previous host and fits your budget perfectly. Also ensure that the provider fulfills all the technical requirements and holds a decent rung in the web hosting industry in terms of both credibility and reliability.

Once you have purchased your hosting package from the new company and your account is activated, upload your archived web pages, scripts and database to the new host. The new hosting company would then allocate an IP number. The webmaster should then test and debug the website and ensure that all functionalities and features are operating smoothly. Once this is done, transfer your domain name service (DNS) servers over from your old host to your new host. During this DNS transition period, the website would be resolved by both the old and new hosts. The user must retain both the old and new hosting services during this hosting solution transition, which lasts one to two weeks. It is also important to check emails from both your hosting providers since some regions of the Internet will direct e-mail to your original host, while other regions will start sending mail to your new server during this propagation period.

It is then safe to cancel your account with your previous hosting account after about 2 weeks have lapsed.

Changing your web hosts is not necessarily a very complex task and in order to ensure smooth transitioning, the web owner needs to ensure that the they select the same control panel and operating system as with their previous host. Alternatively, opt for a hosting company that automates the transition process by employing a tool.

Once you have decided to switch hosts, ensure that you have done your homework well and compared the features and benefits offered by them. Also ensure that the package you choose is upgradeable and look for any hidden costs involved, if any.

When you browse for websites on the internet your browser communicates with web servers via their IP address. Methods have been devised to assign human readable names or hostnames to ip addresses. On a local windows or linux computer this translation can be accommodated in what’s called a host file. On most windows systems the hosts file is located in c:windowssystem32driversetc directory; on Linux or Unix servers the hosts file is commonly stored in the /etc directory.

If I asked “Have you ever been to Disney World?” more than likely you would associate Disney World with the theme park in Florida and you would know would quickly be able to respond either yes or no. But if I said “Have you ever been to 3111 World Drive in Orlando, Florida?” It would not be as easy for you to identify that I was referring to Disney World. You might be able to figure it out, but which is easier to use? In the internet world, 3111 World Drive would be the same as an IP address and Disney World would be the hostname. If you were to equate this to how the internet works, web hosting would be the equivalent of the real estate that Disney world sits on. When you purchase a website domain name, you must have internet real estate (website hosting) for your website to reside on, and conversely if you had website hosting without a domain name then no one would know where to go to access your website.

If you wanted your computer to look for www.npsis.com using the ip address 192.168.20.34, you would make an entry in your hostfile. The hostfile contains entries that look like this: 192.168.20.34 www.npsis.com. When you access the website www.npsis.com using your web browser, your computer would look for the ip address 192.168.65.14.

For hostname to IP translation on the internet the DNS (Domain Name System) is commonly used. When you type www.npsis.com or the name of your website design store or the website name of your company, your computer contacts a DNS server to find out what IP address goes with the domain name or URL that you entered. Whether you are setting up website on a webserver or an email server you need a domain name.

It is important when selecting your website address that you pick a name that is easy to remember. The domain name should also reflect what your business does. For example the website address tomsgarage.com gives you a pretty good idea of what tom does for a living and its very easy to remember. You can also reserve multiple related domain names and point them at your website address as well. Have your website design store help you to incorporate several relevant key words into your website design and point all of your relevant website addressees at your website (i.e. wefixtires.com, bestlocaltireshop.com, toms-tires.com).

Website domain names are reserved on a first come, first serve basis. So if you have an idea for the perfect website address, you should reserve it before you’re your good idea is taken by somebody else. There are many companies and individuals who potentially popular domain names and resell them for a profit.

If you are dealing with a website design store or a web designer you will want to absolutely make sure that you own the domain name and not them. When you purchase a domain name yourself you better protect yourself from predators looking to take advantage of you.

As a reseller of Untangle for Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines, Futuregen is proud to highlight the top of mind questions about the affordable network security software from Untangle.

Why do you need a network security software to secure your network?
If your network is connected to the internet, chances are you are being attacked, spammed, spoofed, or your enterprise assets are being compromised…without you even knowing it! It’s scary.

Securing your network not only protects your enterprise assets, it also ensures that your web facing applications are available to users when they need it. To learn more, here is a short video on the Untangle Network Security Software http://www.untangle.com/video_overview.

If network security is so important, why aren’t other businesses securing their network?
Two factors: Cost and expertise. Top of line security products do cost a lot. It comes with esoteric commands that require a highly trained security professional to operate.

But these are things of the past. Untangle’s solution is not only free to download, it is also easy to use. The graphical interface enables you to set options and then wait for the executive summary reports to arrive via email!

With Untangle’s solution, there really are no excuses for not protecting your network.

What can Untangle do as a Network Security Software?

Well a lot! Here is a list of what it can do, and we call the term in the security industry:

Router. Provides basic routing functionality, and DHCP and DNS servers. It may already be installed depending on the selections made during the setup wizard. If there is already a router on the network, there is no need to install the Router unless replacing the current firewall/router. Router makes the Untangle Server act like a router that by default serves DHCP and DNS with an internal IP of 192.168.1.1, much like a Linksys or Netgear router.

Firewall. You can define what types of traffic can enter your network. So it enables your network to show a ‘smaller attack footprint’ on the internet. In short, it limits the points of entry that are open to hackers.
Web Filtering. It blocks your employees from time-wasting and unproductive surfing. You control what sites are allowed and not allowed for users inside your network. Best of all, you can just select categories like violence, hacking, sex and the software will do the rest!

Spam Blocker. Uses all sorts of spam technologies like blacklists, bayesian filters, signatures, and optical character resolutions to scan email and detect spam. After installing Spam Blocker, it scans SMTP, POP3, and IMAP traffic and can block spam as it enters your network. Users won’t even need to download the spam, and frees them from having to delete it!

Virus Blocker. Scan all network traffic for viruses and drop them. No software is required on the end user desktop: all the scanning is done on the traffic as it transits through the Untangle server. Virus Blocker provides a great solution for those without virus protection on the end user desktops or for those wanting an extra layer of virus protection. Virus Blocker is completely configured by default and requires no extra tinkering or configuration.

Spyware Blocker. Protect users from websites and files that install malicious codes. Spyware Blocker uses numerous techniques to stop spyware from entering your network and stop users from going to places which infect them from spyware. This can save numerous hours of tracking down weird problems and slowness issues caused by malware and spyware.

Intrusion Prevention System. Protects the network from known attack signatures by preventing them from reaching their targets. Using snort signatures, Intrusion Prevention can detect, block, and log attacks. Intrusion Prevention is preconfigured with good defaults to maximize protection and minimize false positives. It gets zapped at the gateway!

Attack Blocker. It is a heuristic based intrusion prevention application which blocks attacks like floods and port scans based on reputation. Attack Blocker also requires no configuration.

OpenVPN. VPN solution that provides remote connectivity directly into the network over an SSL connection. Install OpenVPN and configure the OpenVPN application as a server and go through the setup wizard. In the exported address step, add any addresses to the list which users should be able to reach remotely. In many cases, this is the entire internal subnet, but it can be limited to only a few servers for security reasons.

If it’s a free Network Security Software, how does Untangle make any money?
Untangle sells commercial add-ons for advanced networks. These are sold as subscriptions. Commercial Add-ons include live support, advanced management features and applications for additional security and remote access.

How much does the Untangle Network Security software cost?
Many will get everything they need for free, but with Commercial Add-ons starting at just $5/mo anyone can afford Untangle. The Professional Package with live support is the best value and it starts at just $25/mo. Full price list available online.

Does it cost anything to join?
Nope. And training is free too. If you’ve got customers with spam, spyware, web filtering or remote access needs, we’d love to work with you.

How does subscription licensing work, if I have multiple offices and want to install an Untangle Server with the Professional Package at each one?
The software license is governed by each Untangle Server and the network it services. We have four pricing tiers based on the number of personal computers on the network. The tiers are 1 – 10, 11 – 50, and 51-150, and 151+.

Let’s look at an example:

You have a main office with 78 employees and two branch offices with 25 and 7 employees respectively. You install an Untangle Server in each office and want to run the Professional Package on all three servers. Your subscription would total $225/month broken out as follows:

$150/mo for the main office with 78 employees (51 – 150 license)
$50/mo for the branch office with 25 employees (11 – 50 license)
$25 for the branch office with 7 employees (1 – 10 license)
Additional discounts are available for longer commitments.

What is the difference between personal computers on the network versus employees?

Untangle’s subscription licensing is by personal computers on the network. If your employees share a set of common computers, you should base your license on the number of computers, not the number of employees. Likewise, if your employees have more than one personal computer each, the license is still based on the total number of personal computers.

If you are as excited as we are at this point, your next action should be to download the Network Security software and just try it out!
